The goal of this project was to choose a document, revise and edit any translation issues it has, and then to analyze the document for a specific locale. The red marks in the document represent the edits that I made for translation issues affecting New Zealanders. The red marks that are crossed out represent words that have been cut from the document and the red marks that are not crossed out represent words that have been added for increased understanding of the document.
This project gave me insight on translation issues that technical writers need to be aware of. It is important to know who your audience is and where they are from when writing and editing documents. The most difficult part of this project was analyzing the document for New Zealand. I have never visited New Zealand or researched about their culture prior to this project. Learning how to revise documents for a specific locale was an interesting process, especially since I wasn’t familiar with that culture.
There can be major consequences if global cultural differences are not considered in technical writing. Learning the importance of this has prepared me to always research about my audience and their culture to make sure there are no translation errors.
